Global Teenager Project

Programme Summary

The Global Teenager Project focuses on two-way communication and learning between students in different countries and aims to stimulate the use of cross-cultural understanding. It involves the use of e-mail and Internet to develop discussion among both local and international students.

Communication Strategies

The project activities include capacity building of teachers and students in information communication and technology (ICT), participation in international learning circles, participation in web contests as well as integrating ICT in everyday classroom teaching.

The project’s objectives are to:

  • catalyse structured exchanges among schools and teachers, to foster inter-cultural awareness and understanding by using the Internet and email.
  • enhance the opportunities to young people by promoting new ways of learning and teaching.

The objectives are focused on the use ICTs to connect local and international learners and teachers, developing educational content, promoting cross culture understanding and raising ICT literacy and awareness in schools.

It uses ICTs to build educational impact on the ground, through improved learning content, new teaching methods, but also through local capacity development, networking, and use of ICTs. The focus is on individual teenagers, using ICTs to make their educational experience more stimulating, challenging and ultimately more relevant in today's information societies.

The project provides Ghanaian students with an opportunity for to learn and communicate with their peers in the Netherlands, Jamaica, South Africa, Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Romania, Latvia, Zimbabwe, Zambia, USA, Macedonia, Jordan Egypt, Suriname, Mali and Burkina Faso through the e-mails and Internet.

It aims to foster problem solving, critical thinking skills and to enhance communication skills. “The project helps to develop co-operative and collaborative work strategy.” Activities and objectives include:


  • build capacity of teachers in information communication technologies.
  • embark on collaborative learning process known as "learning circle".
  • create Global Teenager Project Ghana website.
  • train teachers in basic ICT skills.
  • conduct Global Teenager Project “learning circle concept” workshop for teachers.
  • train teachers/students in web design skills.
  • participate in GTP international learning circle.
  • conduct web contest for the best adjudged schools in GTP LC.
  • organise an “open day” to showcase GTP Ghana and to award deserving heads of school, teachers, and students.

Key Points

The project is the result of co-operation between school Net South Africa and International Institute for Communication and Development (IICD).

It was established in 1998 following a pilot Internet Interchange between two schools in South Africa and schools in Netherlands. Focusing on teenagers in Secondary Schools, as well as their teachers.
