Programme Summary

StudyGhana is a project that uses mass media and various information and communication technologies (ICTs) to disseminate information about education to people both in the country and abroad. The project assists in the linking up of qualified students and scholars with donor and funding agencies. It also offers assistance for online application by prospective job seekers to institutions in Ghana. StudyGhana is an initiative of the Media for Development Foundation (MDF), a non-profit, public service-oriented, non-governmental organisation (NGO) based in Ghana.

Communication Strategies

StudyGhana uses a variety of media and ICTs to share educational information and to carry out academic and career counseling and placement in Ghana. StudyGhana serves as an information hub for activities relating to human resource capacity building in the country.

Specifically, the project produces educational video documentaries and instructional programmes for presentation at public workshops, in schools and for screening on national television as well as private viewing at homes. These productions aim to share information about institutions and their programmes and requirements, as well as career possibilities after graduation.

StudyGhana has a weekly television programme featuring short video documentaries and news reports from various campuses. The programme features a practicing professional as a studio guest who talks about training structure and job placement. The show takes live phone-in contributions from viewers and has a quiz session.

The project has a database-driven website with interactive features that include:

  • a directory of second-cycle and tertiary educational institutions in Ghana with regularly updated information on programmes offered;
  • downloadable application forms and other informational materials as well as the ability to apply online to educational institutions and pay processing fees through electronic credit systems;
  • help/enquiry desk which receives feedback from visitors to the website and provides responses to individuals both privately and on bulletin boards;
  • a directory of scholarships, fellowships, grants, loans, etc. that are available for study both locally and abroad, along with links to websites of funding agencies worldwide;
  • a regularly updated information bureau on available academic positions in educational institutions in Ghana (which is designed to help in recruiting personnel for the sustainable development of education in the country);
  • a databank of published papers, research findings, books, etc. to provide a forum for sharing knowledge;
  • a calendar of events to help scholars keep track of workshops, conferences and seminars both locally and abroad, with a password-controlled section that enables subscribers to pay for the download/use of copyright-protected material; and
  • a news column which features major everyday events and issues in the educational development of Ghana and the world at large.

Printed materials are another tool for sharing information. The project plans to publish brochures, pamphlets and eventually a newspaper on education for distribution especially to those without access to the internet locally.
