Reflections and Impressions Art and Writing Competition

The South African National Anti-Discrimination Forum (ADF) FAZE 2 is inviting entries to the 2005 Reflections and Impressions Art and Writing Competition. Artists and writers are invited to record their personal perceptions of South African history and 10 years of democracy. The competition is divided into three categories:


  • Art: A3 or A2 sized canvass (any medium, incl. pencil, charcoal, watercolours, oils etc)
  • Poetry: Maximum of 40 lines.
  • Short stories and Essays: Maximum of 2500 words.

40 art pieces will be selected for inclusion in an art exhibition and auction. Artists whose works are auctioned off will be awarded a flat fee of R200. Selected entries will be published in a collection and awarded a flat fee of R200.

Application Information

Competition rules are:

  • Artists and writers who are South African residents may enter the competition
  • Entries should be the original work of the artist/author, and should not have been previously published/exhibited elsewhere.
  • All entries must be accompanied by a separate sheet of paper with the following information: name and surname, sex, age, postal address, telephone number, email address if any, province, the title of the entry and the medium (e.g. short story, essay, poem, painting).
  • Participants are entitled to submit only one entry.
  • Written entries may be in any South African language.
  • The staff and members of the families of the South African National
    Anti-Discrimination Forum and the competition sponsors are not eligible to enter the competition.
  • The judges' decision is final and no correspondence will be entered into.

Submission deadlines are as follows:


  • Poetry: March 11 2005
  • Stories and essays: March 18 2005
  • Painting: March 25 2005
  • Late submission: March 31 2005, at a fee of R50
