The World Through My Eyes (TWTME)CountryMalawi, Mozambique RegionGlobal, Africa Programme SummaryThe World Through My Eyes (TWTME) is a photography project for young Mozambicans that aims to help children learn about and experiment with photography. "The project was created in 2003 to enrich the lives of Mozambican children." Communication StrategiesDuring the first phase of the project, children were exposed to photography to assess their talent. Participants had access to photographic equipment and were taught basic photography. They produced their own photography portfolios, received a programme certificate, ten of their photos in an album, and a photo CD. Organisers say: "The first phase proved that photography is of value and interest to Mozambicans and was well received both by those who partook in the project and those who attended the two gallery showings." The long-term goal of TWTME is to create a permanent photography school for young Mozambicans. Organisers say they hope to train selected students, who have been with the project for a time, to work as volunteer aids in teaching others. "Over time those selected students will possibly become staff members." TWTME also uses photography to raise awareness about, and raise funds to support, various health-related issues impacting Mozambique's children and youth. In 2005, Mozambique was chosen by the Red Cross Oregon Trail Chapter, along with other Development IssuesYouth, Children, Health. Key PointsThis project uses photography as a tool for preserving culture and traditions by recording the present for future generations. PartnersU.S. Embassy in Maputo, Mozambique.
