Programme Summary

Association of Journalists Against AIDS in Tanzania (AJAAT) is an association formed by journalists concerned by the spread of HIV/AIDS in the country. The association supports efforts of journalists who seek to deepen their journalistic expertise and knowledge on HIV/AIDS and the social, economical and political factors that affect it.

Communication Strategies

The association's objectives are to:

  • Promote writing (Newspapers/Newsletter) and speaking (Radio, TV programmes) about the already existing campaign for people to abstain from and unsafe sex.
  • Encourage journalistic efforts to ensure behavioral change in order to contain the spread of HIV/AIDS.
  • Play a networking role to bring together journalists aspiring to join the worldwide campaign against HIV/AIDS.
  • Promoting professional debate on matters related to HIV/AIDS pandemic.
  • Working with and supplementing publicity efforts by such organisations and institutions as the Tanzania Commission for AIDS (TACAIDS), National AIDS Control Programme (NACP), the Joint UN Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) as well as other local and international groups and individuals working against HIV/AIDS.

AJAAT has embarked on the following projects:

  • Training:

    Capacity building to its members on several aspects on HIV/AIDS' correct and accurate reporting
  • Website:

    AJAAT is planning to launch its website which will play a pivotal role of linking up journalists covering or interested in HIV/AIDS issues. The website will also act as a venue for information sharing among Journalists, Medical Doctors, Scientists, Researchers, Policy Makers, People Living with HIV/AIDS (PLHAs), Faith Based Organisation Representatives, Social Workers and other people. One of the features will be the email forum (e-forum) where people will be debating on various issues regarding HIV/AIDS via email.
  • Newsletter:

    The association's newsletter – The CRUSADE Against HIV/AIDS covers news, issues and articles on HIV/AIDS mostly focusing on behavioral change among the youth and young adults, advice and other related issues.
  • Hope Productions:

    It is the association's strategy to set up its own production unit for Radio/Television on HIV/AIDS programmes for local stations. These programmes will play a role in providing the public with accurate information about causes, spread, impact and prevention of HIV/AIDS. They will be also offering a real opportunity for the community to have access to updated and accurate information on possible break-through for a vaccine or cure.

AJAAT'S mission is to contribute to the prevention, care and control of HIV/AIDS in Tanzania by providing innovative communication interventions that will facilitate positive behavior change to reduce the spread of HIV/AIDS.

It aims to give Tanzanian society access to correct information, facilities and services on health/HIV and also empowered them to utilise them for their personal protection and the future of the nation.
