Programme Summary

Beyond the Classroom is a South African television and radio series. Each week the programme focuses on providing guidelines and lesson plan ideas for how teachers can use broadcast media in their classrooms.

Communication Strategies

The lesson plans include the use of programmes from School TV, but also many other educational programmes covering the full spectrum of formal schooling. The programme provides educators with updates and news from a national and provincial level as well as an in-depth look at key issues facing the teaching community. In supporting teachers to use media in the classroom, The project organiser, SABC Education provides a number of support services:

  • a web-site
  • printed resources which can be faxed on demand
  • a video sales service
  • a telephone hotline
  • outreach and training sessions
  • printed materials or booklets for selected programmes.

Each of the services is free and endorsed by the Department of Education to be used by the teaching community as an educational resource.

Beyond The Classroom focuses on teachers, providing motivation, resources, and a place for teachers to interact with each other and find out more – sharing information and ideas, investigating the pressing issues in education and taking educators beyond the classroom.

The programme aimes to enhances teaching and learning through media. The prpgramme aims to hear teachers' ideas, their news and challenges. It aims to show the world education solutions that teachers have found, and share them through radio and TV. The programme is trying to find schools, principals, and especially teachers who go the extra mile and have been innovative in coming up with solutions to various problems they are facing, be they financial, social or on-the-job issues.
