Programme Summary

Teenage Life is a programme that goes around Tanzania spreading the word to the youth, about how to deal with problems that are facing young people. The project warns the youth about prostitution, rape, drug abuse, drunkenness and robbery, which are believed to play a significant role in the spread of HIV/AIDS.

Communication Strategies

Teenage Life was started in Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania in July 2002. The project has been using personal contact to spread information about HIV/AIDS in the street, in schools and at public meetings. After gaining experience and more support, Teenage Life also conducted workshops at Dar Es Salaam University. It has visited various regions in Tanzania, presenting a message on HIV/AIDS, aimed particularly at youth, and have conducted interviews for TV and DTV/Channel Ten.

Teenage Life has traveled to Botswana to conduct research and to prepare a video documentary on "The Impact of Mass media in Combating HIV/AIDS in Youth in Botswana Compared to Tanzania". The documentary was shown on DTV/Channel Ten.

Development Issues

Youth, HIV/AIDS

Key Points

The project is aimed at helping to reduce the spread of HIV/AIDS in Tanzania. It also aims to facilitate youth participation in the development process, in programmes to build their skills and capacities, and in initiatives for positive and sustainable change. Youth Life links with youth and anti-AIDS organisations and receives material support from the Tanzania National AIDS Control Programme in the form of posters, brochures, leaflets and calendars.

The project participated in the International Student Week in Tanzania, which involved students from 60 countries, in September 2002. During the World Youth Congress 2003 in Morocco the organisers shared their experience in HIV/AIDS and the other fields they were involved in.
