Programme Summary

Simbani Africa is a radio news agency project of the World Association of Community Radio Broadcasters (AMARC). Launched in 2003, Simbani Africa aims to build bridges between various African communities both in rural and urban areas through information sharing. The agency does this by gathering information from various African communities in order to broadcast these voices to as wide an audience as possible. The news agency aims to generally be an information source, serving institutions, non-governmental organisations (NGOs), civil society, and the non-specialised media that - from the perspective of AMARC - too often report only on urban information. "Simbani" means "talk" in ChiChewa, a language spoken in Malawi, Zambia, and Mozambique. Located at AMARC Africa's head office in Johannesburg, South Africa, Simbani’s aims are to:
  • reinforce the capacities of community radio broadcasters
  • promote the right to information
  • create space for communities in the information society
  • enable communities to manage their own communication processes
  • contribute to the development of communities through the provision of information and awareness building
  • encourage inter-cultural dialogue through exchange of experiences
  • promote cultural diversity
  • provide information based on sustainable development issues
  • promote local content and local languages
  • be a strategic partner for development agencies, institutions, universities and research and civil society organisations
  • promote the use of information and communication technologies (ICTs) in local content production
  • be a tool for networking and information exchange

Communication Strategies

Simbani Africa, through its correspondents, collects information on where community radio stations are located and feeds it to the news agency. The agency’s correspondents produce content that is then distributed via the agency's website on a daily basis. The agency also broadcasts weekly thematic features with audio. The focus areas for the stories include: gender, the environment, sustainable development (human rights, democracy, elections and conflict resolution), food security and agriculture, and HIV/AIDS.

Specifically, stations send information on local issues to the news agency for e-mail distribution. Working languages are English and French and the programmes are then translated into local languages by correspondents who want to use the material. Information is shared with the help of technology and the necessary equipment. The news agency is equipped with an audio production digital studio as well as digital training facilities. At the other end, selected radio stations that the correspondents operate from are equipped with a computer, software, and internet connectivity to enable them to upload and download news.

Stories are redistributed via a central audio website where productions from the news agency are posted for possible downloads for those members equipped with the necessary facilities. The agency also uses traditional redistribution methods such as fax and postal mail.

Key Points

Organisers say "More than ever, communication remains a challenge in a world that is exposed to globalisation...Until recently, the African population - largely illiterate - was frequently denied the right to express itself. But, for more than a decade now, local community radio has become a great tool - wisely established, used and managed by the communities themselves who take ownership on it - contributing to change in attitudes and thus to sustainable development." According to the organisers, rural radio and community radio is a participatory medium that gives a voice to the people themselves, allowing them to proactively take part in decision-making and thus to determine their own futures.
