Programme Summary

Radio Dialogue is an effort to create a community radio station in Bulawayo and the surrounding areas. Although the project does not have a broadcasting license as of this writing, the project is organising road shows in the community where people participate by singing, dancing, or exploring the meaning of community broadcasting and its advantages. Radio Dialogue aims to provide a channel of communication on economic, political, social, cultural, and developmental issues that confront the Zimbabwean community.

Communication Strategies

The Broadcasting Authority of Zimbabwe has not yet invited applications for community radio licenses, so the project does not have a broadcasting license. As of this writing, the programme is recording in a production studio with no signal transmission facilities. Project organisers say: "While we are waiting to start radio broadcasting, we are making full use of our facilities and equipment to pursue our objectives through other legitmate media related activities."

The project is working with:

  • local musicians, singers, and drama groups - to promote their art through recordings, audio and video cassette production, and live shows.
  • local health personnel - to promote healthy lifestyle choices, especially among youth.
  • young people - to promote development through Dialogue Clubs in the suburbs.

Radio Dialogue also plans to work with other organisations:

  • for the production of audio and video cassettes for the disabled, disadvantaged, and marginalised members of the community.
  • to put on live events that promote community development themes (HIV/AIDS awareness, elimination of domestic and other violence, promotion of women's rights, etc.)

In 2003, the programme formed the Zimbabwe Association of Community Radio Stations (ZACRAS) in an effort to provide a platform and resource base for all community radio initiatives as well as for organisations and individuals with an interest in promoting, establishing, and running community radio stations in Zimbabwe. Other ZACRAS activities include creating awareness on the value of community radio for development, freedom of speech, and the promotion of local culture, especially among marginalised minorities.
