Programme Summary


The PARI [Interactive Radio Learning Program] was introduced to emphasize the importance of preventative health care habits for children. It is a radio programme that seeks to appeal to all ranks of Bolivian society. It uses an Interactive Radio Instruction [IRI] methodology.

Communication Strategies



Messages in the format of stories, songs, games, radio drama, interactive stories, practical demonstrations, questions and answers, written exercises. Instructors use positive motivation, active participation, use of skills, practical examples. Observers assessed the appropriateness, methodology, effectiveness of style and technical aspects of the material that was reaching children.

Child care, nutrition, respiratory disease, diarrhea, epidemiology, hygiene, pregnancy, adolescence, cholera, immunizations

Key Points



The program fits well with reforms which are taking place to Bolivia's education system. It highlights multi-lingual and multi-ethnic groups through songs, games, and characters from all over Bolivia. 19,111 third grade students in were exposed to Bolivia's "Cuidemos Nuestra Salud" in 1992 as a pilot project to teach schoolchildren. The program grew very rapidly and by 1995 was being taught to grades 3 through 5. Teacher training is provided.
