Programme Summary

A radio drama addressing men and promoting male motivation to adopt effective family planning practices. The objectives of the project were to increase knowledge of family planning methods among men of reproductive age, change their attitudes regarding family planning, increase modern family planning methods usage between these men and their partners, and to promote male involvement and joint decision-making between spouses on family planning issues.

Communication Strategies

52 episodes of a 30-minute semi-weekly radio programme ("Akumwera Nechuchera"), a series of 80 motivational talks in workplaces and villages, as well as 2 pamphlets on family planning benefits and methods. The radio drama soap opera targeted young men through characters with economic and social hardships due to large families.

Key Points

This male motivation project was the first family planning information, education, and communication campaign for men in Sub-Saharan Africa. The project featured a strong monitoring and evaluation component.
