Programme Summary

This group was established to create and strengthen community radio initiatives in Haiti as a development tool. Its objective was to support clandestine radio stations that broadcast positions different from the dictator's. Today, 20 community radio stations in 8 departments throughout Haiti benefit from its support.

Communication Strategies

SAKS is not a financing institution, but it gives support to community stations by offering them training, assessment, and maintenance. Its documentation centre and production studio enable it to produce programmes for the stations and to generate most of its income.

SAKS contributes to educating, assessing, and expanding knowledge on topics including health, hygiene, agriculture, and medicine; it is also an instrument to raise awareness about human rights, civic responsibility, and women's rights. It also acts as a communication tool in a country where telephones are very limited.

SAKS works to create a network with stations in developing countries in order to motivate the exchange of ideas and experiences. Members of the network share a pledge to denounce any type of information censure.
