Programme Summary

The Oral Andean History Workshop (THOA) is a group that focuses on indigenous studies. It brings together Aymaraqhichwa and Uru investigators whose aim is to investigate, disseminate, and revitalise the culture, history, and identity of the indigenous peoples of the Andes. THOA seeks to promote the reconstitution of the original Ayllu communities through investigation, empowerment, advice, and consultation in order to support the autonomy of the indigenous population. A broad goal is to enable indigenous people to achieve equal rights and political participation and to be effective in negotiating with the State Government.

Communication Strategies

THOA investigates the history, gender relationships, rights, and culture of the indigenous people of the Bolivian Andes and their interrelationship with the mestizo segment of the population. It uses radio and video documentaries to communicate and disseminate docudramas about indigenous culture and rights, historic dates, and testimony on the organisational processes and demands of the indigenous population.

THOA relies on indigenous leaders and authorities to foster collaboration between, and support, indigenous peoples regarding their rights and their organisational and territorial actions and other concerns. The organisation also points the way for and collaborates with indigenous organisations in their organising efforts and in the legal steps they take to achieve territorial rights. Finally, THOA maps territories and demands that they be titled as Common Lands of Origin.

THOA seeks to empower indigenous women so they can develop their talents and participate in politics and society within their own community and on a national level.

THOA publishes the findings of investigations conducted by indigenous authors and produces material for intercultural and bilingual education.
