Youth Awareness Perspective - KenyaCountryKenya RegionGlobal, Africa, South Asia Programme SummaryConducted in the Nakuru District, Rift Valley Province of Kenya, this programme was initiated in January, 2002 by Kenya AIDS Intervention Prevention Project Group (KAIPPG). Piggybacking on the efforts of existing school clubs (counseling clubs, AIDS clubs, and Girl Guide Clubs) in three schools, the pilot version of the project will run for 44 weeks, with monitoring continuing through to May, 2003. The research component of this project involves speaking with youth in local high schools to find out their general attitudes toward life and, in particular, toward the problems affecting them (like educational, socio-economic, and cultural pressures; family issues; drug, alcohol, and substance abuse; criminal activity; promiscuity and prostitution; and child labour). YAP then conducts lectures and outings to help young people tackle the issues they say impact them at personal, professional, and international levels - with a specific focus on combatting a feeling of helplessness among young people and adults alike with regard to these problems. The anticipated outcome of the programme is a statistical database of information gleaned from discussions with young people for use by all stakeholders. This database is meant to serve as a tool to assist young people in attaining life skills that will, it is hoped, enhance their citizenship as members of the Kenyan community.
