Proyecto Planeta Paz (Project Planet Peace) - Colombia

Country

Colombia

Regions

Global, Latin America

Programme Summary

Project Planeta Paz seeks to promote and consolidate popular and social sectors (Afrocolombians, environmentalists, peasants, civil organisations, communication, culture, indigenous peoples, youth, women, unions and solidarity groups), which have been traditionally excluded from political processes so they can participate more actively in building a political, dialogue-based solution of the Colombian conflict.

Its mission is to contribute to the strengthening of leadership skills of community leaders of social and popular organisations leading to greater participation and greater influence on the peace building process and vindication of their rights. Planeta Paz also promotes citizens' initiatives with a focus on peace building and seeks to make viable the agenda of popular sectors through the formulation of adequate proposals, dialogue among academics and social leaders, and the articulation of a collective agenda.

Communication Strategies

Planeta Paz works with social leaders from eight regions of the country (Caribbean Coast, Pacific Coast, Antioquia, Coffee Region, Northeast, Cundiboyacense, Center y Oriamazonia). Its main strategy is to develop communication, dialogue and consensus-building skills of popular and social leaders as they negotiate peace building solutions with the State, the armed groups, civil society, and media. It is a training Project that includes research and communication components.

Development Issues

Social agenda; democracy; armed conflict; political negotiation and political development; human, economic, social, cultural and environmental rights; vindication of rights and resistance.

Key Points

Projecto Planeta Paz structured an intervention strategy based on a training process that articulates the following:

  • A pedagogical component which focuses on the dialogue of knowledge and exchange of new and alternative methodological and educational practices.
  • A research component which focuses on the exchange of experiential and academia knowledge.
  • A communication component, which seeks to make visible on the media peace initiatives and leadership experiences.
  • A sectorial component, which seeks to establish relationships and communication with social leaders at the regional and national level.
  • An international component, which aims to create conditions leading to the establishment of dialogue between national and international sectorial agendas, in the context of globalization.
  • An implementation component, which seeks to create political, human, financial and environmental conditions to reach the best level of development of the project.

Projeto Planeta Paz emphasises training of popular leaders, with the aim of stimulating the construction of a social agenda that is incorporated into the political negotiation of the conflict.
