Programme Summary

The Independent Journalism Centre (IJC) is an independent non-governmental and non-profit organisation that works for the independence of the media and extension of freedom of expression in Nigeria. The organisation was created with a vision of evolving and sustaining highly skilled and knowledgeable media professionals who work to ensure the sustenance of democratic ideals and human development.

The organisation's objectives are:
  • Acquisition of better technical and professional skills by journalists and media practitioners;
  • a better environment for democracy and press freedom to strive;
  • emergence of a broad-based, diverse, vibrant, and courageous mass media;
  • greater involvement of the media in the struggle to attain better standards of living and human development; and
  • greater involvement of the media in the promotion of international understanding.

Communication Strategies

Activities include training of working and prospective journalists, research in contemporary media issues, media documentation, and publishing and implementation of media projects that contribute to the uplifting of Nigerians who live in rural areas.

The College of Journalism is the training arm of IJC where prospective and working journalists are trained in journalism and mass communication. The college awards Ordinary Diplomas, Advanced Diplomas, and Post-Graduate Diplomas in Journalism. It also offers periodic courses in languages and computer studies. Facilities available in the college include an Internet Centre, a Print Workshop, and Television and Radio Broadcasting Studios. The college also organises periodic seminars and training workshops to teach skills to media practitioners.

The Documentation Centre stocks books, journals, and visual and audio materials to service the resource requirements of local and international media, human rights activists, and media professionals.

The Programmes Department implements media-related development projects across Nigeria. It often collaborates with NGOs and donor organisations to execute projects aimed at media development. The department publishes Media Monitor, a weekly electronic digest that features developments in the Nigerian media scene. The department also publishes regular alerts on freedom of expression, rights violations, and networks with International Freedom of Expression Exchange (IFEX) and other international freedom of expression bodies to combat infringements on press freedom.
