Programme Summary


Institut Panos Paris will be awarding three grants for radio equipment, with a maximum value of 7.5 million Cfa each, to independent radio stations in the following countries: Cap Vert, Guinea Bissau, Ivory Coast, Guinea, Mauritania, Niger, Senegal, Chad, Togo, Gambia, Ghana, Liberia, and Sierra Leone.

Development Issues



To promote the creation of and development of independent radio stations in West Africa. To encourage the production of radio programmes that will help anchor a culture of democracy and cultivate a spirit of peace and tolerance.

Key Points



Conditions: 1. Located in one of countries mentioned above. 2. Demonstrate respect for professional codes of conduct. 3. Have obtained an agreement to assign a broadcasting frequency. 4. Be an independent radio project (community or non-profit making), with no political, ethnic or religious affiliation and ready to begin broadcasting at the beginning of 1999 at least. 5. Ready to enter into a partnership agreement with IPP to co-produce and broadcast radio programmes. 6. Provide evidence of other co-funding agreements. Documents: 1. Attribution of broadcast frequency agreement. 2. Statutes and staff of the radio station. 3. Programme schedule (specify language). 4. Description of area in which broadcast will be received. 5. Technical study of the site for the radio. 6. Application including estimates of costs with, where possible, technical specifications of the new equipment desired. Selection Procedure: An awards panel will examine applications using a common scoring system. A final decision will be made after Institut Panos Bamako has visited the three short-listed projects. The purchase and installation of technical equipment will be carried out in partnership between the radio station and the Institut Panos Bamako. ***Application submission should arrive before 28 October 1998 at the address listed below.
