Meena Communication Initiative - South Asia

Region

Global, Africa, South Asia

Programme Summary

"A multi-media campaign with animation as a flagship." Conceived in 1990 and launched in 1998, this programme presently includes a film animation series based on the story of a young spunky South Asian girl who braves the world (efforts to go to school, to fight the social stigma surrounding HIV/AIDS in her village, etc.), along with related supporting materials (posters, comic books, flipcharts, educational packages, facilitator's guidelines for organizing group discussion, Child to Child activities, etc.)

Communication Strategies

Three phases to this programme so far: 1) 2 years of organisational research, identification of management and artistic talent, production, testing and evaluation of pilot episode and materials; 2) 5 years of further research, development of partnerships for dissemination, outreach activities, and production of 11 additional film episodes based on the research; 3) In 1998, mass dissemination and utilization of Meena materials at the regional and national levels. Script solutions came from South Asian people themselves, through in-depth formative research, making the films more acceptable, culturally relevant and entertaining to the target audiences.

Development Issues

Child rights, girls rights.

Key Points

A 13-part film animation series created to engage, challenge, and entertain people. The character of Meena was created to serve as a role model, with the issue content of the films established through extensive research with audiences of children, adults, and families -- both urban and rural -- in South Asia. Possiblities for expansion of this programme include a Meena Foundation, commercialised marketing of Meena products, and the production of a second film series.

Partners

UNICEF, The Norwegian Government, and South Asia Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC).
