Journalists Against Corruption or Periodistas Frente a la Corrupción (PFC) - Latin America

Regions

Global, Latin America

Programme Summary

PFC is a regional anti-corruption project that works to strengthen democratisation processes in Latin America by "promoting quality and ethical watchdog journalism and supporting journalists and media dedicated to investigating and exposing corruption." PFC is an arm of Probidad (or Probity, in English).

Communication Strategies

PFC is a virtual network of 425 Latin American journalists, as well as a clearinghouse and service provider for these journalists and for the organisations that support them. PFC provides investigative assistance and advocates for journalists and media when they suffer reprisals for their activities.

Specifically, PFC's principal activities include providing investigative assistance to motivate and upgrade press coverage of corruption and cross border collaborations; free press monitoring and defense, with a focus on journalists and media that investigate corruption; and outreach and advisory services that promote conditions conducive to media's improved and continued watchdog role. The PFC site and journalist network are intended to be fundamental points of references and support for journalists and media that report on corruption. Furthermore, PFC operates an online Free Press Advocacy clearinghouse that tracks legislation and court rulings, attacks against journalists and media and actions on their behalf, and provides a wealth of resources and information to understand and support free press issues in Latin America. Development Issues

Rights, Political Development, Democracy.

Key Points

According to programme organisers, limited access to information, restricted freedom of expression, and government initiatives and reprisals that block media investigations or threaten them with prosecution, fines, and imprisonment are commonplace and increasing in Latin America, especially when media attention is on corruption.
