Programme Summary

CiSCGHAN is the national coalition of civil society organizations (CSOs) working on issues in the prevention and impact mitigation of HIV/AIDS in Nigeria. The coalition was formed during a consultative workshop for CSOs involved in HIV/AIDS work held in Abuja on 30th-31st August 2000. A total of 74 organizations drawn from 35 states and FCT Abuja participated in the formation of the coalition. CiSCGHAN's Mission is to coordinate, facilitate and advocate to ensure the needs and issues of CSOs working on HIV/AIDS are addressed and to provide a coordinated and coherent input into the National Response to the HIV/AIDS epidemic.

Key Points

Nigeria has, by 1999 sero-prevelance surveys, been shown to have crossed the threshold of 5% infection rate. This is acknowledged to be the point at which the epidemic begins to gallop forward in a geometric manner, exacting a deadly toll and presenting a very serious challenge in terms of curbing expansion. Nigeria, the continent's most populous country, accounts for one in every five Africans. Poverty, and the impact of years of neglect and plundering, leaves Nigeria ill equipped in organizational and material terms to take on the massive challenge which HIV/AIDS presents.
