Programme Summary

TV to Africa is a programme of the Voice Of America (VOA) that produces television about Africa, for Africa. It both produces programming and broadacsts shows tailored for African audiences. In VOA's estimation, "The programme offers a comprehensive line-up for viewers all over the continent."

Communication Strategies

TV to Africa programmes are seen and heard on more than 50 affiliate television and radio stations all over Africa. In addition, viewers in other parts of the world tune in to see what's happening on the continent. The programme uses broad satellite network to allow all Africans and others to tune in, no matter where they live.


The TV To Africa programmes include:

  • 'Healthy Living', which focusses on health news and information affecting Africans. The host speaks with experts on a variety of health issues, including effective treatment and prevention of diseases and conditions. The programme also gives the latest news and medical breakthroughs. Other segments include 'Ask the Doctor' featuring African physicians who answer viewers' questions, 'The AIDS Corner' on the newest developments in prevention and treatment, and a background video package on a specific health issue.
  • 'Special Report Africa' features a mix of in-studio analysis and on-the-road documentaries. "The programme gives viewers a deeper look at life on the continent through in-depth features like "Power Where You Need it Most: Voices of South Africa," an original documentary production on AIDS in South Africa."
  • 'Straight Talk Africa' is a live, one-hour call in programme that is heard and seen on VOA's affiliate stations. Viewers and listeners join the discussions via radio, television, or the Internet as the host and guests discuss the latest news and political developments on the continent. "Weekly topics include news and current events, political developments, social and media issues."
  • The 'Africa Journal' programme is a combination of expert analysis, studio discussion, news features, and comments from viewers for an hour of discussion and debate about Africa. The programme examines the critical issues and events shaping Africa's political, economic, and social landscape.
  • The 'Washington Forum' addresses the francophone Africa region. Produced entirely in the French language and broadcast on Thursdays, this live, half-hour weekly show features veteran VOA journalists and analysts and newsmakers from all over the world. 'Washington Forum' analyses the latest events in Africa, the United States, and internationally.
