Programme Summary


This cooperation of senior newspaper and radio editors was formed June 5, 1998 to use media to promote peace, national reconciliation and stability in Liberia. Their objectives also include working to "assume the role of an early warning system on developments with potential to brew conflict; help to inculcate in the citizenry the virtues of tolerance, and respect for the rights of others, including religious, cultural, traditional and political rights; ensure that media reportage of conflicts, be they ethnic, religious, security or governance-related, is geared towards their reduction/resolution; develop the capacity of the media institutions through training on reportage of conflict; and propagate the ‘Liberian Dream' which is built around the quest for unity, freedom and justice for all."

Communication Strategies



They hold monthly meetings which are projected to attract media executives and senior practitioners to discuss topical national issues of conflict nature, reflect on the media reportage of the past month and chart a course for the following month. Peace and Reconciliation Messages are disseminated on radio and in the newspapers. MAC is also planning to hold training workshops and plan discussions with government officials, including law enforcement agencies, on cooperation with the media in the provision and dissemination of information regarding developments that have the potential to induce/reduce conflict.

MAC is seeking partnerships in terms of funding for its Monthly meetings, Peace Messages, and other programmes as may be deemed fit, by partners/donors in relation to MAC's objectives.

Formed by representatives of 15 print and electronic media institutions following a meeting in Monrovia to discuss the role of the media in conflict situations. Conciliation Resources (UK) collaborates in area of training.
