Country

Jamaica

Regions

Global, Caribbean

Programme Summary

This project executed by the private group Island of Industry aimed at awareness creation and education by means of a series of weekly TV shows on basic information communication technology for the average Jamaican needing skills to participate in the modern information age.

Communication Strategies

In addition to a weekly television show "Computer User" (each season consists of 13, 30 minute long episodes), free off-air support was provided with a call-in telephone service line and the establishment of a Web page. Customized videos could be requested by specific organisations such as educational institutes, businesses and governmental agencies.

Development Issues

Awareness and education in basic information communication technology, business, government

Key Points

In a country where computer literacy is low, and information technology is increasing, education for the general public and private sector was seen as an important issue to address. Minimal regard is given to age or background, and this is done by simply showing visual hands-on techniques with actual computer hard and software over public access television.
