Sensitisation on Constitutional Issues Project - Burkina Faso

Country

Burkina Faso

Region

Global

Programme Summary

This project was established in an attempt to sensitise officials and citizens about legal issues contributing to the enforcement of Burkina Faso's "état de droit". By developing training programmes about the constitution and using information communication technology on three levels to distribute that information to regional offices, local officials will be educated and trained to communicate this information to their citizens.

Communication Strategies

At the national level, there was the development of an information database, training of trainers and development of educational materials including "interactive" radio programmes and multi-media applications. At the regional level activities included education of local officials using PowerPoint and Internet, training of local officials in meetings and conferences and development of multi-media training materials in cooperation with local media. At the local level, activities included information and discussion meetings, led by local officials, and collecting feedback from citizens on on the influence of the constitution on everyday life.

Development Issues

Political development, democracy

Key Points

With the adoption of a new constitution in 1992, and a recent introduction of the processes of democratisation and decentralisation, local elected officials need to be made aware of the content of the constitution.
