JuniorsummitRegionGlobal Programme SummaryThis summit was held in November 1998 in a partnership between Massachusetts Institute for Technology (MIT) and private global companies, where youth between the ages of 10 and 16 from 130 countries were united on the web to participate in a global internet discussion. Twenty topics were identified by the youth prior to the discussion to streamline the talks. Communication Strategies10,000 children were invited to an internet discussion. Recommendations were submitted to influential people coming from political, social and cultural spheres. Development IssuesPoverty, malnutrition, starvation, unemployment, handicapped/disabled children and their parents, homelessness and street children, loss of culture and tradition, drug and alcohol abuse, community service, integrating school systems globally, high quality, free education for children, racism, peace, youth violence, environment, energy crisis, technology, child labour, sexual abuse, and prostitution. Key PointsWhen children did not have access to computers, they were provided with such through their school or nearest community centre. Prior to the discussion, a website was created where children identified what they considered as being the most acute problems faced in today's society and proposed ideas on how to overcome these issues.
