Region

Programme Summary

It is estimated that family violence occurs in 1 out of 3 households in Nicaragua with the vast majority of instances of abuse directed at women and children. While there are many different groups and organisations seeking to prevent this violence from occuring, the country has lacked a unified effort. Puntos de Encuentro seeks to create organisational links by launching a multi-faceted media campaign that enlists the resources and support of many different groups that are working to prevent violence against women and children. Largely aimed at youth, this media campaign critically examines and deconstructs issues of racism, sexism, homophobia and classism and promotes positive alternatives.

Communication Strategies

A television program, El Sexto Sentido, designed to explore issues of sexuality, domestic violence, health, alcoholism and other issues relevant to youth. A magazine, La Boletina, that takes a progressive look at women, sexuality and preventing violence in the home. A national radio programme, Joven sin Nombre, in which young people talk about issues related to their lives. A leadership development programme that strengthens skills and integrates an analysis of race, class and gender.

Development Issues

Women, youth, children, health and nutrition, family planning, education, peace.

Key Points

Violence against women has been deemed a national disaster in Nicaragua. In order to prevent domestic violence there is a need for national and local anti-violence organisations to communicate and share ideas. Puntos de Encuentro has produced a multi-media campaign that focuses on both promoting anti-violent ideas among youth and providing women with education on health and sexuality.
