Programme Summary

A UNFPA funded a project from 1998 - 2000 called "Integration of Youth Reproductive Health into Boy Scouts & Girl Guides Education & Community Development Programmes".

Communication Strategies

Partner Boy Scout and Girl Guide Associations, at no cost for the Project, implemented awareness creation and information activities: 2377 Girl Guides, 4790 Boy Scouts and their parents were informed and sensitized to adolescent RH issues, in addition to young people (about 8000 boys and girls).) Presentations, lectures, group discussions, songs, public awareness campaigns, marches, door to door contacts, drama shows, song festivals and drawing/ poster exhibitions, celebration of international events (such as World AIDS Day, World Population Day , Women Day,..etc) have been used to advocate for and educate about adolescent RH issues. Produced a RH training guide for BS/GG leaders with sample participatory activity sheets. The project established a regional network of 47 trained Boy Scout and Girl Guide Commissioners/ Focal Points from Jordan, United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Tunisia, Sudan, Morocco, Lebanon, and West Bank and Gaza. It is to be noted that Palestinians withdrew from the network due to their special circumstances and were replaced by Lebanon. All partner Boy Scouts and Girl Guides Associations adopted Adolescent Reproductive Health and incorporated it in their regular current educational and community development programs. RH committees have been established at the central national and local levels .
