The Gender Mainstreaming in Water and Sanitation Course, offered by Network for Water and Sanitation (NETWAS), aims to assist staff from governments, donor agencies, non-governmental organisations (NGOs), community based organisations (CBOs) to acquire the knowledge and skills to address gender and to mainstream gender in their projects/programmes.
This is a one week full time residential course. A certificate will be awarded to those who successfully complete the course.
The course is designed for:
- Staff working in development programmes;
- Staff who plan and manage gender activities in water supply and environmental sanitation projects/ programmes;
- Staff who are responsible for promoting gender in community water, environment and sanitation (WES) projects/ programmes;
- Gender trainers working in WES and other development projects/ programmes;
- Leaders and managers of community based organisations, NGOs, donor agencies and government ministries.
The course aims to:
- establish a common understanding of gender and gender mainstreaming in relation to WES projects/programmes;
- share experiences on current practices in gender and gender mainstreaming in WES and other development projects/programmes and take stock of best practices;
- explore interventions that promote gender and gender mainstreaming for improved socio-economic conditions that enhance sustainability of WES projects/programmes;
- enhance participants knowledge and skills to plan, mainstream and implement gender in WES projects/programmes.
The course uses participatory learning techniques. The sessions include short introductory presentations, discussions, group work, case studies and practical exercises. Participants will visit community based projects for practical field experience. The NETWAS Documentation Centre which has a variety of current and relevant publications, access to the Internet and a conducive reading environment will be used extensively. NETWAS International staff together with their associates, with extensive experience in gender mainstreaming will guide the participants throughout the course. A course file and relevant publications will be provided to each participant.

The course fee is US$950 per participant. This will cover tuition, course file, books and field trip.
Fullboard accommodation is available at the venue of the course at an additional cost of US$300. This is optional and participants may arrange their own accommodation. However, it is advisable that participants stay at the venue.
Participants are advised to secure adequate medical and liability insurance cover.
The number of participants is limited to a minimum 15 and a maximum 20 participants. Final selection to the course is done upon receipt of payment. Participants are advised to pay at least 1 month before the commencement of the course to allow time to receive joining instructions. If there are not enough registrations, the course may be cancelled or postponed.
