Location

Nairobi, Kenya

Event summary

The course, offered by Network for Water and Sanitation (NETWAS), seeks to introduce the concept of the Community Led Total Sanitation approach which recognises that sanitation brings both public and private benefits, and that individual hygiene behaviour can affect the whole community. The training encourages communities to decide on their own understanding of total sanitation and to consider what their communities should look like when it is achieved.

This is a one week full time residential course that offers theory as well as practical exercises. A certificate will be awarded to those who successfully complete the course.

The course is designed for:

  • Staff from training and resource centres who are interested in organising their own training courses in the field of hygiene promotion and environmental sanitation;

  • School teachers and tutors responsible for hygiene, environmental sanitation education and promotion in their institutions;
  • Leaders and managers of community based organisations, NGOs, donor agencies, and government ministries.

The course aims to:

  • establish a common understanding of up-to-date approaches (current trends) like community led total sanitation, environmental risk reduction, social marketing, social mobilisation, advocacy, gender equity, among others as key ingredients towards sustained hygiene and environmental sanitation behaviours;
  • share knowledge and experiences on current practices in hygiene and environmental sanitation and take stock of best practices;
  • improve participants' awareness and use of the various participatory methods and tools that are used and have proven effective in hygiene and environmental sanitation promotion;
  • assist participants to develop individual/group strategies to implement hygiene and environmental sanitation to optimise benefits from water, environment and sanitation (WES) services.

The course uses participatory learning techniques. The sessions include short introductory presentations, discussions, group work, case studies and practical exercises. Participants will visit community based projects for practical field experience.
