Linking Water, Sanitation and Hygiene to HIV/AIDS: Effective Home-Based Care Approaches (Nov 12 - 16 2007)

Date

November 12, 2007

Location

Nairobi, Kenya

Event summary

According to the organisers of this workshop, Network for Water and Sanitation (NETWAS), the Millennium Development Goals (MDG) are strongly inter-dependent as the targets for water, sanitation and hygiene can contritute to mitigating the effects of HIV/AIDS.

Diarrhoea, intestinal parasites and skin diseases are some of the most common opportunistic infections among people infected with HIV/AIDS and improved water supply, sanitation and hygiene can reduce the incidences of these infections. This allows people living with HIV/AIDS to live a healthier, longer and more productive life.

Home-based care (looking after people living with HIV/AIDS at home and within communities) is now regarded as an essential element in the continuum of care, whether hospital admission is feasible or not. This course has been developed to improve participants' knowledge, skills and attitudes on the role of water, sanitation and hygiene in effective home-based care.

This is a one week full time residential course. A certificate will be awarded to those who successfully complete the course.

The course is designed for:

  • Senior and middle level staff working in HIV/AIDS related programmes;
  • Staff from public health institutions;
  • Staff working in integrated programmes where HIV/AIDS is a cross-cutting issue;
  • Staff of funding agencies and government social service providers.

The course objectives are to:

  • Generate new strategies and ideas of improving water, sanitation and hygiene in communities and households affected by HIV/AIDS;
  • Highlight the value of integrating HIV/AIDS in water, sanitation and hygiene development plans;
  • Encourage incorporation of water, sanitation and hygiene components in strategies for combating HIV/AIDS;
  • Equip participants with information, strategies and skills on water, hygiene and sanitation relevant to HIV/AIDS programmes.

The course uses participatory learning techniques, which include brief presentations, discussions, group work, case studies and practical exercises. The participants' skills and experiences are fully incorporated in the sessions to enhance relevance. The NETWAS Documentation Centre, which has a variety of current publications, provides additional resources. Participants will also make a field visit to gain a real-life experience. This course will be conducted in English.
