African Civil Society Forum: “Democratizing Governance at regional and global level to achieve the MDGs” (Mar 22-24 2007)

Location

Ethiopia

Event summary

The purpose of the Forum is to bring together representatives of national, regional and international non-government organisations (NGOs) from Africa to explore the most effective ways to partner with and impact on African institutions such as the African Union, the United Nations (UN) Economic Commission for Africa and the New Partnership for African Development (NEPAD).

This Forum is part of the Conference of Non-Governmental Organisations in Consultative Relationship with the United Nations (CONGO's) outreach programme, in which - in the past five years - they have organised civil society, twice in Asia and once in Latin America, aimed at bringing the UN agenda into the regions and the regional input back to the global level. The African Civil Society Forum 2007 will therefore raise NGOs' awareness of the issues on the UN agenda, most notably the Millennium Declaration and the Millennium Development Goals.

The discussion will focus around 3 main clusters:

  • Peace and human security
  • Governance and human rights
  • Development: trade, finance, debt relief and investment

The programme will include the following:

  • Building UN/NGO Partnerships for Democratic Governance to achieve the MDGs
  • Civil Society Organisations’ (CSOs) role in achieving the MDGs
  • CSOs Capacity Building to have an effective role in public policy and decision making processes
  • Follow-up on the UN Reform process and the Secretary General (SG’s) Report: In larger Freedom
  • Youth CSOs and good governance: following up the ADF recommendations
  • Women at the peace table

Free and Plural Media

What is your answer to James Deane's blog question: "Is a free and plural media more important than elections in securing democratic development?"
