Event summary

The Leadership in Strategic Health Communication course (LSHC), run by the Stellenbosch University HIV Programme in partnership with the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health / Center for Communication Programs, aims to draw from South African and African leadership. The ultimate aim is to enable action, communication and leadership that will improve and maintain sexual and reproductive health.

The course aims to:

  • Improve the ability of participants to formulate a vision for health communication within their organisation
  • Facilitate self-actualisation
  • Develop advanced advocacy skills
  • Enhance the ability to critically evaluate health communication strategies according to relevant research and data
  • Provide opportunities for peer review of existing communication strategies and outcomes
  • Strengthen the network of professionals working in HIV/AIDS/reproductive Health and Tuberculosis in SA through the establishment of an e-network database for the course alumni
  • Provide cutting-edge knowledge, resources and technology that will help produce better health communication.

The course content includes:

  • Communication pathways to a Health Competent Society
  • Leadership and management for Health Communication
  • Knowledge management in Health Communication
  • Advocacy
  • Objectives and message design
  • Interpersonal communication
  • Leadership concepts in designing programmes for change
  • Social marketing
  • Introduction to Reproductive Health (RH) and HIV
    The P process (a strategic planning tool to systematically build
    health communication programmes)
  • The communication process
  • Software technologies to design, implement and evaluate Health Communication interventions: SCOPE
  • Programme analysis
  • Audience segmentation for RH and HIV
  • Media planning
  • Materials development

The course will be presented by members of the Johns Hopkins Health Communication
training team under the leadership of Dr. Lozare; “an international communication expert
who has extensive academic and practical experience.” The team will also include
local HIV and reproductive health experts within Stellenbosch University.

The course is aimed at professionals and leaders in: non-governmental organisations (NGOs), government departments, the donor community, academics, private business, people living with HIV/AIDS, and civil society.

Registration Information

Deadline for application is March 20 2007

Only 25 participants can be accommodated.
The fee of R19,300 and includes 4 star hotel accommodation for 2 weeks including refreshments and 2 meals a day.

If registration and payment occurs before 20 February 2007 participants will receive a discount of R2,000 (Total cost - R17,300).
