Event Summary

Strategic Communication Resources launches its 2007 New York City-based Interactive Workshop Series on different aspects of health communications.
Renata Schiavo, senior health communications consultant, founder of Strategic Communication Resources, New York University adjunct professor, and author of Health Communication: From Theory to Practice (San Francisco: Jossey-Bass, April 2007) designs and facilitates all workshops. Overview

Health communication is increasingly recognised as a key approach to help change health and social behaviour with the goal of improving individual and public health outcomes. As the flow and volume of health information and messages continues to increase, breaking through the noise with tailored, multifaceted communications programmes is a strategic imperative to reach target audiences. This session is for people and organisations that are considering reaching out to health professionals, donors, healthcare providers, policy makers, patients, constituency groups or the general public.

In this workshop participants will:

  • Learn how health communication can advance organisational, public health and audience-specific goals
  • Learn the dos and don’ts of effective health communication planning
  • Become familiar with key steps and methods in health communication planning and evaluation
  • Review case studies on what makes health communication programmes succeed or fail
  • Discuss the recommended use of a range of channels and tools used for health communication: radio, print, television, internet, drama, theater, interpersonal communications vehicles, community-based events, professional communication vehicles, and others
  • Learn key elements of cost-effective and culturally competent programming

Participants can bring examples, questions and case studies from their organisation.
