International Interfaith Peace Forum (Nov 15-18 2006)

Location

Jakarta, Indonesia

Event summary

Organised by the Asian Muslim Action Network (AMAN), this forum will include topics such as Asian Youth at the Crossroads, Peace Processes within Multi-Ethnic Nations in Asia and Beyond, and Media for Peace. The forum includes plenary sessions in the morning and a variety of presentations to choose from in the afternoon.

Representatives from civil society organisations including women, youth, indigenous people's movements, scholars and peace activists have been invited to organise a series of thematic workshops. The forum will help to share experiences, identify issues of common concern, analyse them and come up with concrete future action agendas. Moreover, the forum helps to promote mutual understanding, cooperation and solidarity.

One workshop will facilitate the sharing of experiences of those working with migrants, refugees, asylum seekers in Asia in the areas of mobilising resources and helping migrants meet their basic needs (food, accommodation, safety and medical care), providing spiritual, moral and emotional support to the migrants and their families and addressing psychological issues. Other issues such as developing working relationships and networks in support of migrants' needs for legal aid and solidarity and enabling migrant children to continue their education will be addressed. The role of the UN system and relevant national and international law will also be discussed.

AMAN was formed in October 1990 in Chiang Mai, Thailand, when a group of like-minded scholars and social workers came together during the Asian Consultation. AMAN is a network which seeks to respond in a small way to the numerous challenges that the people in the region are facing. Such challenges range from mass poverty, corruption, materialistic life style, increasing ethnic, religious and communal conflict, violence against women and children, HIV/AIDS, and environmental degradation.

The forum will be held at the Islamic State University in Jakarta. Accommodations and food will be provided by AMAN for those who register early. Due to limited funding, the organisers do request that participants explore alternative funding to cover airfare. Because AMAN is sponsoring the accommodations, any donation to help defray costs is very welcome.
