IAMCR 2006 Conference: Knowledge Societies for All (July 23-28)

Location

Cairo, Egypt

Event summary

This conference, organised by the International Association of Media and Communication Research (IAMCR), aims to help "establish new insights into the multiple dimensions of the issues and strategies that are related to the 'digital divide' as well as barriers to the growth, use and development of information and communication technologies and the media."

According to the conference website, plenary speakers and other conference participants will bring critical insights to issues relating to the role of the media and networked communities in contributing to, or challenging, democratic processes in a globalising world. They will address key issues concerning historical and modern 'knowledge societies', perspectives on the waxing and waning of empires and the role of the media and means of communication. Debates about media ethics and religious models of communication, global governance in 'knowledge societies' and the role of the media and communication in development will emphasise issues around human rights, gender equality, the obligations of citizens and the responsibilities of governments, the private sector and civil society organisations.

The IAMCR Working Group on HIV/AIDS will meet during the course of the conference. The aim of this working group is to provide a forum for testing and critically reviewing interventions and policy employed to change behaviours. This includes identifying, highlighting and analysing practices which seem to show progress; and identifying the factors promoting failure or success to integrate the successful strategies into current and future practice and policy. Deadline for submissions of abstracts for the working group is January 31 2006.
