This issue includes a number of awards and funding opportunities with deadlines between September and December of 2005. This is just a small selection of the full listing, which can be found on the Awards Page. Details about the prizes are in the full descriptions including: criteria, deadlines and previous winners. AWARDS

1. Rory Peck Awards

Offers recognition to freelance cameramen and camerawomen in the form of 3 separate awards for international impact, hard news coverage, and feature stories. These awards recognise not only the quality of the work produced in these fields, but the risks undertaken by freelance workers in order to obtain these images.

2. UNESCO Digital Arts Award 2005

Offers a prize of US$10,000 to young emerging artists for digital artwork created in the theme "Cities and Creative Media."

3. GKP Youth and ICT Awards 2005

Recognises young social entrepreneurs who have used information and communication technologies (ICTs) to transform "social development opportunities into a sustainable social enterprise." Winners will participate in Phase 2 of the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) in Tunis, Tunisia in November 2005.

4. GKP/PANOS Journalism Awards 2005: Reporting on the Information Society

Offers 4 awards of US$1,000 each to print, radio, TV and web journalists who produce the best works on the theme "Where is the money for bridging the digital divide?" Winners will also be invited to attend the World Summit on the Information Society, in Tunis, Tunisia in November 2005.

5. Changemakers Innovation Award for Market-Based Strategies that Benefit Low-Income Populations

Honours innovative market-based strategies from both businesses and citizen sector organisations that improve the lives of low-income individuals in different parts of the world. Participants compete in an "open source" format by entering solutions to pressing social issues while collaborating to advance current initiatives. The top 4 entries, as judged by the online community, will receive awards of up to US$5000.

6. 2005 National Population Cartoon Contest

Recognises cartoons that "can best portray the relationship between human population growth and issues affecting the quality of life." A total of US$10,000 will be awarded to cartoonists who must be working and publishing in the United States.

7. African Information Society Initiative (AISI) Media Awards

Awards Africa-based journalists and institutions who promote journalism "which contributes to a better understanding of the information society in Africa." The awards aim to encourage informed coverage of the information society and Information and Communication Technology (ICT) for development issues in Africa.

Deadline: Sep 30 2005

8. IPDC-UNESCO Prize for Rural Communication

Recognises an activity focused on improving communication in rural communities, chiefly in developing countries. A prize of US$20,000 will be awarded to draw attention to particularly meritorious and innovative activities undertaken with a view to improving communication in all its forms.

9. International Photoshare Photo Contest

Offers prizes for photographs communicating local health and development issues. Photos may come from personal travels, volunteer service or work experiences. A variety of prizes will be awarded, with the first place winner receiving US$300 and Canon PowerShot SD500 Digital ELPH Camera.

10. CBA-UNICEF Award for Children's Programme

Recognises "high quality, innovative radio or television programmes for children that educate and entertain." The organisers ask that these programmes cover important child-related issues such as child protection, girls' education, childhood development or HIV/AIDS. Programmes should be creative, educational and entertaining to children.

Deadline: Oct 15 2005

11. CBA-Amnesty International Award for Human Rights Programme

Recognises a radio or television feature focused on any area of human rights. The organisers are looking for programmes that are challenging, have high production values, are engaging for a wide audience and are likely to have made an impact on policy.

12. CBA-World Bank Award for Programme on Development

Recognises a radio or television feature that focuses on development issues. According to the organisers, the "programme must be more than a simple narrative. It should be challenging and push the boundary of media freedom."

13. Elizabeth R Award for Exceptional Contribution to Public Service

Recognises "an individual who has made an exceptional contribution to Public Service Broadcasting." The organisers are looking for people who have brought about significant change and have influenced the quality of public service broadcasting in a particular area.

14. APC Betinho Prize

Recognises and supports initiatives involved in economic development in Latin America or the Caribbean. The organisers seek projects that make a positive economic contribution to the community; are driven and developed in Latin America and the Caribbean; and can demonstrate a sustainable use of technology.

Deadline: Oct 16 2005

15. Young Active Citizens Awards 2005

Awards "concrete examples of educational methods and tools which are used for promoting young people's active citizenship, and raise awareness of European citizenship." Materials should be designed to educate young people on issues of European citizenship and identity and Europe's commitment to human rights and democracy.

Deadline: Oct 30 2005

16. Gates Award for Global Health 2006

Offers US$1 million to an organisation "that has made a major and lasting contribution to the field of global health." Public, private or charitable institutions in any country may apply. The award recognises those who "have developed processes for improving health, especially in resource poor settings, with measurable results."

Deadline: Oct 31 2005

17. Kyoto World Water Grand Prize

Awards an individual or organisation whose long term efforts work towards addressing water issues in developing countries. The prize winner will receive 5 million Japanese Yen (approximately US$45,000) in support of their current work or of similar efforts.

18. Citizen Activist Award

Recognises the exceptional achievement of people who have initiated social change in the United States. The award aims to recognise activist efforts to confront, challenge and correct social injustice in the United States.

Deadline: Nov 5 2005

19. PETA Mekong Partnership Project Awards

Offers awards of up to US$8,000 for "innovative projects and performance-based initiatives tackling issues of gender, sexuality and HIV/AIDS." These awards are available exclusively to arts groups and networks in the Greater Mekong Subregion, and all projects should be in support of local and regional efforts.

20. Martin Ennals Award for Human Rights Defenders

Recognises someone who has demonstrated an exceptional record of combating human rights violations by courageous and innovative means. The prize aims to encourage human rights defenders who are in need of protection. The value of the award is 20,000 Swiss Francs, to be used for further work in the field of human rights.

Deadline: Dec 9 - Annually

21. Stockholm Challenge Award 2006

Awards the best initiatives that accelerate the use of information technology for the social and economic benefit of citizens and communities. The objective is to help local entrepreneurs, who work to close the digital divide, by bringing in research communities, development organisations and strong corporate initiatives.

Deadline: Dec 31 2005

22. For Diversity, Against Discrimination Journalism Award

Honours "journalists who contribute with their work to a better public understanding of the benefits of diversity and the fight against discrimination in employment." Journalists in European Union member states are invited to submit entries on discrimination based on race, ethnic origin, religion, beliefs, age, disability or sexual orientation. Entries may also relate to issues of promoting diversity in employment.

FELLOWSHIPS

23. Alfred Friendly Press Fellowships

Offers 6-month working fellowships for non-U.S. print journalists from developing and transitional countries with an emerging free press. Applicants should be early- to mid-career status, with at least 3 years of experience as a print journalist, a demonstrated commitment to a career in journalism in the home country, and current employment as a journalist with an independent print media organisation.

Deadline: Sep 1 - Annually

24. Health and Population Innovation Fellowship (HPIF)

Offers fellowships to mid-career individuals in India who have innovative ideas and leadership potential in the areas of reproductive health and rights. The fellowship gives particular priority to themes of maternal mortality and morbidity and the sexual and reproductive health and rights of young people.

Deadline: Sep 15 2005

25. Advanced Research Fellowship Programme 2005

Provides funding to post-doctoral African scholars interested in carrying out advanced research on any aspect of the African social reality. The programme is open to candidates from all disciplines of the Social Sciences and Humanities.

GRANTS & SCHOLARSHIPS

27. African Youth Foundation (AYF) Scholarship Award

Provides scholarships to African youth who win a writing competition on the theme "ICT and Education in Africa." The writing contest is for Africans between the ages of 18 and 30, with a vision on how information and communication technologies (ICTs) could help their generation and nation to create jobs and eradicate poverty. The contributions of all contest winners are published in a booklet by the AYF.

28. Documentary Photography Distribution Grant Program

Offers grants of US$5,000 to US$30,000 to photographers who seek to present their completed projects to the public in an innovative way. The goal of this grant is to enable "photographers who have already completed a significant project on issues of social justice to present the work to the public in innovative and appropriate ways, ensuring that the work gains critical exposure and also has the greatest chance to stimulate constructive social change."

29. African Women's Development Fund - Main Grants Program

Funds local, national, sub-regional and regional organisations in Africa working towards women's empowerment. The AWDF funds work in the areas of women's human rights; political participation; peace building; health, reproductive rights and HIV/AIDS; and economic empowerment.

30. The AIDS Support Organisation (TASO) Experiential Scholarship

Supports 80 full and partial scholarships to organisations and candidates from both the public and private sector that have interest in HIV/AIDS care and support work and would like to learn from TASO's experience.

31. Film Making Grants on Tolerance and Peace

32. Creative Education Fund

Aims to help grassroots organisations use Hesperian books to develop simple, creative, health education projects that will benefit women and/or girls. The projects must be developed and managed by women.
