1. Cholera Prevention - Somalia - UNICEF has provided technical and
financial support to COGWO, a women's grassroots organisation which seeks
to create public awareness on cholera prevention through religious leaders,
primary and Koranic school teachers and women. UNICEF is also supporting
radio messages in health education and cholera prevention by

2. Society for Alcohol & Social Policy Initiative (SASPI) - India - is a
Social Aspects Organisation for research, education and awareness building
on alcohol use and abuse issues, and advocacy to facilitate more effective
policy formulation. Their purpose is to ultimately initiate and implement
community programmes that develop policies, practices and interventions to

3. Community Media Development Organisation (COMEdo) - Zambia - is
carrying out a survey on the state of community media in Zambia. The
survey seeks to examine and assess the political environment in relation to
the development of community media, and to review and assess the potential
of local structures to promote and support community media. Final report

4. Radio Toco - Trinidad & Tobago - this community radio station was
inaugurated by the Toco Foundation in Nov. 1997 with a 22-watt transmitter
and a 5-mile radius of coverage. Coverage is now 30 miles reaching approx.
100,000 people. Volunteer staff is 70% female, and programming, determined
mostly by village women, includes health advisories, consumer,
environmental and farming capsules, and news items and music. Contact

5. Participatory Communication Survey - Global - This survey will provide
an active on-line information pool for institutions involved in
participatory communication. People's participation is a key element of a
durable development process. To succeed, projects have to be based on true
dialogue between development institutions and local actors. Participatory
communication is the methodology used to promote this dialogue. Contact

6. Knowledge and Information for Development Forum continues. 750 people
have signed on with many stimulating contributions. The Forum takes as its
point of departure the World Bank's "Knowledge for Development" report and
a Panos Institute critique.

7. The Creative Exchange - a growing exchange of research and
information for people working for change and development. 'Promotes
understanding of creativity as a catalyst for change, understanding and
respect for cultural rights, and enables practical creative action for

8. The Sexuality Information and Education Council of the United States
(SIECUS) is hosting an Internet poll. Through Feb. 1999, vote for the
people who have been influential in changing the way the USA thinks about
sexuality issues. SIECUS develops, collects and disseminates information;
promotes comprehensive education about sexuality; and advocates for the
right of individuals to make responsible sexual choices.

12. An African Regional Conference on Internet Governance was held in
Cotonou, Benin on Dec. 15-17, 1998. Documents from that conference,
including a general report, are online. Click here. A
proposal to establish an African Regional Network Information Center
(AfriNIC) was adopted. Click here.



13. Communication for Social Change - On Jan. 28th, The Rockefeller
Foundation convened a meeting of other US Foundations and the Communication
and Social Change network which their Communication Division is
facilitating. Participants reviewed progress the network is making with
[a] redefining the role of communication for social change in development
work; [b] facing critical issues including training, skills and identifying
human resources; [c] delivery systems; and [d] evaluating effectiveness.

14. 1st International Conference on Traditional Medicine & HIV/AIDS will
be held Mar. 11-12, 1999 in Dakar, Senegal by The Association for the
Promotion of Traditional Medicine (PRO.ME.TRA). Representatives of
traditional medicine organizations from 15 African countries, USA, Mexico
and Polynesia will participate, with recommendations being made to the
13th International AIDS Conference in Durban, South Africa - July 2000.

15. The Cultural Environment Movement (CEM) Solidarity Convention will
be held Mar. 25-28, 1999 at Ohio University, USA. CEM is a non-profit
coalition of organisations and individuals in every state of the USA and 57
other countries on 6 continents, united in working for freedom, fairness,
gender equity, diversity, and democratic decision-making in media

16. International Executive Media and Television Workshop will be held
Apr. 27-29, 1999 in Amman, Jordan. Organised by The Center for Development
Communication, the workshop will provide executives in international
organizations, NGOs, ad agencies and corporations skills to develop better

19. Health Magazine - Pan American Health Organisation's bi-annual
Perspectives on Health magasine is on-line. This project of PAHO
highlights direct experience garnered through successful intervention and

Social Mobilisation and Social Marketing fellowship in the USA. He is

Sundie Sinkala, formerly information and research officer with the Zambia

Jacob, a senior Indian development journalist formerly with the Centre for
Science and Environment (CSE) - Indian Regional Co-ordinator, based in

22. The Annenberg Public Policy Center at the Annenberg School for
Communication, U. of Penn., USA, seeks 2 or more Post Doctoral Fellows in
health communication. Fellows will work on both theoretical and evaluation
projects related to health communication campaigns involving experiments,
