Utilizing the power of football to build a better future like any other region of the world, girls and boys from disadvantaged communities face numerous problems same as in this country.
Their families often live below the poverty threshold. Due to lack of guidance, many children lack skills making it difficult to find employment. They are exposed to health risks, alcoholism and drugs. Girls and young women especially face violence and crime, more than a few are discriminated and excluded from social life.
Football like any other sport has the power to unite people and cultures all over the world. As a team sports it promotes fairness and tolerance, leapfrog gender borders and fosters mutual understanding, thus contributing to the positive development of personality and character.
With the recent world cup hosted for the first time in South Africa, people all over the country were proudly engaged in the game. The youth development sport (YDS) project utilizes that spirit. It focuses on the social dimension of the game, empowering disadvantaged girls and boys to improve their future perspectives.
