Over the past 8 years she has had experience working as an art director or graphic designer developing publications, campaign and advocacy material for various organizations in Kenya - including UNEP, Population Council Kenya, and KIPPRA, and this helped refine her communication skills while working in multi-cultural environments. Velma is passionate about the arts scene in Africa - music, art, dance, photography - which she uses to feed her critical arts correspondence writing for Arterial Network and Marimba Media, based in South Africa. She aims to grow as a writer highlighting and documenting the growth and expansion of the African craft industry and other development areas. She is keen on on the use of creative arts and the creative economy as a tool for development. This has seen her manage one of the biggest theater productions in Kenya today – "MoFaya the Musical" for Rainmaker Limited - an opportunity that saw her gain invaluable management skills. "Mo Faya the Musical" was a good example of how the arts and culture can be a vehicle for driving bottom up development and change.
