I was an instructional designer for the univeristy's distance learning centre for several years when I came into contact with non traditional learners (working, above forty, etc.) . It was both amazing and perplexing to observe these adults combined technology skills, self direction and motivation to pursue their university degrees. I then had the opportunity to teach technology to 50 yr olds school heads and later got involved in research with rural internet center users. The experience deepened my interest in the use of technology for development, be it for self development or capacity building of the community.
I have been with the university for more than 25 years. I hold a Masters degree in Physics, a graduate certificate in open and distance learning and a PhD in Instructional technology. I work on technology for affective support and enhancement of connectedness through ICT. I have written books in the field of technology (specifically in teacher education and online distance learning). I am a proponent of design and dvelopment research (DDR). I , however, derive satisfaction from working with people in the community. My intention is to pursue this interest through both research and community projects.
