The Living Together Institute was created with spit, string and a passionate commitment to human development. It is based on the belief that our creative capacities, however daily or ordinary, can heal us, empower us and can reinitiate our development. In many ways, it has been developed with the belief that culture, creativity and democracy have a lot in common, each are fundamental to social and individual development and in each everyone has something of value to contribute. They create a grove of trees, their collective strength being greater than one alone.
The Living Together Institute is a testament to our collective ability to not only create new things out of the old, but to also create wonderful and meaningful things out of virtually nothing; and nothing is what many people have plenty of.
The LTI was started in 1999 (as the The Living Together Project) and has grown over the years because of ordinary people, friends, neighbors, families and communities who believe that “we are all living with HIV/AIDS” and that all of us black and white, gay and straight, rich and poor, HIV + and not, religious and non-religious, young and old can together create and build positive community environments that support our collective development. We have created new forms of association.
The LTI is a method of building community in the time of HIV/AIDS by reinitiating our collective and individual growth through creativity and performance. The LTI exists at the border of theatre, therapy and community development.
