Name: Joab Chakhaza
Organisation: Zodiak Broadcasting Station
Role: Projects Officer / Presenter / Producer
I am a professionally trained teacher and a practicing radio broadcaster. I was trained at the University of Malawi’s Chancellor College as an O level teacher in English and French. I graduated in 2003 with a Bachelor of Education (Humanities) Degree and proceeded to teach at O level for 2 years. I worked as a secondary school teacher of French and English for two years, in 2005 I joined the biggest private radio station in Malawi, Zodiak Broadcasting Station where I am working up to date. As a broadcaster I produce and present radio programmes, read news bulletins and conduct outside broadcasts, create read radio adverts and commercials and write news items for the newsroom. I also supervise all productions to be aired on radio on top of producing and updating the programmes schedule. My other specialties are production and presentation of HIV and AIDS related programmes as well as human rights oriented programmes. I am currently projects officer, heading the Projects and Special Events section at Zodiak Broadcasting Station. In the years 2007 to 2008, I successfully studied and obtained a Master of Science Degree in Strategic management from the University of Derby (Through the Malawi Institute of Management). I plan to become a professional journalist and use my skills to improve lives of local Malawians. I have a strong passion for issues of HIV and AIDS and human rights. I believe I can serve the Malawian people even better if I am professionally trained in these areas among many other areas of interest. I am the Media liaison officer for the Men to Men Movement (Men against gender – based violence) under the Malawi Human Rights Resource Center since 2008. This has exposed me to many human rights issues affecting women in Malawi. I have worked on many radio projects that focus on human rights issues that are common in Malawi and mostly Africa.
