AND WHO FARAI MATEBVU, EXPERIENCE AND INTERESTS? My name is Farai Matebvu, a freelance and Investigative journalist based in Mutare- Zimbabwe specialising my reporting on politics, science, technology and Innovation and development in Zimbabwe and Sub Saharan Africa As a senior journalist who contributes journalism work in Zimbabwe and in Sub Saharan Africa for a long time now, I have made tremendous progress in ensuring that I change lives through my journalism work and advocacy activities for media freedom, diversity and pluralism. I'm the founding Chairperson of the Zimbabwe Environment and Science Journalists Association which was formed in 2010, Current chairperson of Mutare Press Club, Current MISA Zimbabwe Mutare Advocacy chaiperson as well as volunteer in the activities of Zimbabwe Union of Journalists in Mutare. In my advocacy and volunteerism work as a media person i have been heavily involved in organizing meetings with local residents to interface the media and policy makers. I have been involved in initiating workshops, networking, mentoring, programs for journalists. In my capacity as chairperson of Mutare Press Club and MISA Zimbabwe, I organize meetings that advocate for free information flow and freedom of expression from journalists perspectives Being a very active journalist so much immersed with media freedom at heart and new emerging media platforms, I am trying to always promote a great independence in my job, but also sharing both information and experiences with colleagues in Zimbabwe and rest of the world. I’m a seasoned investigative and developmental journalist with over 9 years of experience as a correspondent, reporter, senior reporter and assisting lecturer at the Zimbabwe Open University in the department of Media and Journalism studies. I am freelancing as well and, therefore, know both sides of the desk: Especially the myriad difficulties faced by journalists reporting on development, politics, environment and other sciences which are integral societal fields for helping citizens make informed choices. As a leader in media I'm motivated to confront the challenges of digital rights, cyber-crime and to defend journalists persecuted/ prosecuted while discharging their duties to inform the citizens. I'm also motivated to advance journalists activities that expand their scope of work and base, create more training and professional enhancement facilities, ensuring that media freedom, freedom of expression, media diversity and plurality remain leading force in journalism and society. There is no gainsaying in the fact that Modern civilisation is increasingly being shaped by such tenets I'm interested in promoting criticism of researchers and media policy—on behalf of democracy and humanity because i understand that my job is to enlighten and empower consumers of news for democratization of the global human space and making of knowledgeable choices and decisions about their lives.
