Lurdes Mutola Foundation
The Lurdes Mutola Foundation (LMF) was founded in 2001 as a mechanism for helping young female athletes to develop their athletic potential. Although this still constitutes a part of LMF’s objectives, the foundation has developed in terms of concept and capacity. The LMF implements programs focusing on youth development. The programs primarily use sports, education, culture and entrepreneurship as means to change attitudes and behaviors especially emphasizing on preventing HIV/AIDS and promoting gender equality and life skills education. The main goal of the LMF is to improve living conditions of youth and of society as a whole. The mission of the LMF is to promote and facilitate the development and empowerment among youth, by encouraging their entrepreneurial skills, their creativity and their ability to take initiatives as well as improving their physical and intellectual capacity. The LMF works closely with other organizations and local communities to obtain sustainable development in the Mozambican society. At the moment, LMF is working with a national project, Moving Girls' Football Forward (Futebol Feminino em Movimento) focusing on girls' empowerment through football (soccer) where we train voluntary coaches in sexual & reproductive health and rights, human and civic rights and HIV/AIDS, domestic and secual violence prevention.
