As a communications and cultural researcher, I have conducted extensive qualitative research in the impacts of community radio on indigenous communities of South Africa, coordinated and managed research projects for the Centre of Communication, Media and Society (CCMS), lectured and provided consultations on matters of policy research in the broadcasting and telecommunications industries of South Africa. While working at CCMS, I have worked on a number of projects for the Indigenity Project (a research initiative into indigenous ownership, human rights and tourism) where I have managed a team of researchers and conducted surveys and focus groups using participatory methods and tools of data collection. The biggest project I was involved in was a forty thousand dollar USAID funded survey on matters of HIV/Aids awareness amongst Bushman communities in the Northern Cape in which I assisted in the design of the survey, trained and managed the field staff and analyzed the data. I also provided editorial assistance to the many academic journals and publications the Centre produces and was a layout designer for the centre’s quarterly magazine, SUBtext. Thus, my time as a researcher provided me with valuable skills in academic research, editing and publishing which I can bring to the role, while my experiences with indigenous communities in places of conflict or hardship will add a more grass-root and participatory approach of facilitation and negotiation among stakeholders, clients and beneficiaries to the position.
As a communications strategist, I have worked for DIAL Africa and SADD on matters of marketing, branding, content production and advocacy. For DIAL Africa, I assisted in the rebranding of the NGO by redesigning their logo, newsletter and website and provided a strategic plan for their digital communications. While at SADD I worked as the organization’s content production manager where I effectively managed a creative team of 5 and produced content for the organization’s seat belt and drunk driving awareness campaigns. Over the year, two educational videos were produced and distributed across all schools in South Africa, creating a successful advocacy campaign among the youth of South Africa. While a number of PSA adverts were created for television and the Internet, with two them making it onto South African broadcasters. I also have a history as independent photographer, videographer and director, where I have taken photographs for a number of NGOs and travel magazines, directed award winning shorts films such as The Voice of Our Forefathers and trained indigenous communities and youth groups in video production. These creative talents as well as my content and information production skills are well suited for the production and distribution demands of the position and will enhance the design and presentation of publications
