The Journal of Media And Communication Studies (Jmcs) is a multidisciplinary peer-reviewed journal that will be published monthly by Academic Journals (http://www.academicjournals.org/JMCS). JMCS is dedicated to increasing the depth of the subject across disciplines with the ultimate goal of expanding knowledge of the subject.

Call for Papers

JMCS will cover all areas of the subject. The journal welcomes the submission of manuscripts that meet the general criteria of significance and scientific excellence, and will publish:

Original articles in basic and applied research
Case studies
Critical reviews, surveys, opinions, commentaries and essays

JMCS is an Open Access Journal
One key request of researchers across the world is unrestricted access to research publications. Open access gives a worldwide audience larger than that of any subscription-based journal and thus increases the visibility and impact of published works. It also enhances indexing, retrieval power and eliminates the need for permissions to reproduce and distribute content. JMCS is fully committed to the Open Access Initiative and will provide free access to all articles as soon as they are published.

Request for Proposals: Design and Delivery of a UNICEF Learning Course on Advances in Social Norms and Social Change for Children

UNICEF is seeking to partner with an institution to develop and deliver a learning programme on social norms for its staff.

Purpose

The purpose of the learning programme is to build the capacity of UNICEF staff and, where relevant, staff of selected UN partners to stimulate and accelerate positive social change for children at scale. The course will cover the heretofore neglected area of social conventions and social norms which is shown to be essential for sustained positive social transformation. It will also cover the related programming implications. Increasing this capacity will enable UNICEF staff to better work ‘upstream” and develop partnerships to scale up programming to achieve the Millennium Development Goals.

The learning programme aims to make UNICEF staff able to recognise situations where harmful and/or discriminatory norms are in place and act on them. More specifically, it will:

Support social change through the involvement of the stakeholders (including children and adolescents) in shifting societal norms and behaviours which results in violations of children’s rights (for example child and forced marriage, child trafficking, FGM/C, HIV stigma, youth violence)
Strengthen the protective collective role of families and communities by stimulating reflective dialogue and open discourse on local values protective of children and their relation to human/child rights
Promote meaningful and ethical child participation and empowerment in active dialogue on social norms and change

PEP CALL FOR PROPOSALS

The Poverty and Economic Policy (PEP) Research Network announces a call for proposals for its 2010 competition for research grants with a total value of up to $CAN 50,000 each

DEADLINE: January 6, 2010

PEP provides financial and scientific support to teams of developing country researchers studying poverty issues. Specific objectives are to:
• Better understand the causes and consequences of poverty
• Propose pro-poor policies and programs
• Improve the measurement and monitoring of poverty
• Strengthen local research capacity on poverty issues
• Develop new concepts and techniques for poverty analysis

To maximize capacity building, PEP favors teams composed of at least one senior researcher supervising a gender-balanced group of junior researchers. PEP especially encourages proposals from the poorest countries. Funding includes a core research grant of $CAN 20K, plus separate funding of up to $CAN 30K to participate in training workshops, PEP meetings, international conferences, study visits and other activities. All team members must originate from and reside in a developing country during the course of the project.

Grants are awarded under four programs:

Community Based Monitoring Systems (CBMS) : For the development and institutionalization of a community-based poverty monitoring system involving either: (1) the development and pilot-test of a CBMS, or (2) expansion and institutionalization of an existing CBMS.
Modeling and Policy Impact Analysis (MPIA): Analyzing the impacts of macroeconomic shocks and policies on poverty and income distribution (Priority themes: Inclusive growth, public spending and agricultural policies ).
Policy Impact Evaluation Research Initiative (PIERI): Evaluations of the impacts of interventions that aim to increase human capital and alleviating poverty, e.g. child health, schooling, training and safety net programs.
Poverty Monitoring, Measurement and Analysis (PMMA): Monitoring, measurement and analysis of a wide range of poverty issues (Priority themes: Multidimensional poverty, public spending, intrahousehold allocation and poverty dynamics.

Call for Papers: Communication and Development Studies Program

As the world draws towards the end of the first decade of this millennium, the development community continues to grapple with many of the same long-standing questions on how to tackle complex issues in the development field. The role of communication in advancing efforts toward finding solutions to the challenges of our day has become increasingly central to international development efforts and remains a major issue of concern for scholars and practitioners.

The Communication and Development Studies Program, in collaboration with the CommDev Student Association, invites submissions from scholars and practitioners who are interested on the role of media and communication for development and social change. Submissions can cover issues that include, but are not limited to, Education, Media, Governance, ICTs, Health, Gender, Children, Religion, Human Rights, and Globalization. Graduate students, faculty and practitioners from any discipline with research interests in development and social change are welcome to submit their papers. This conference is intended to be a platform for engagement and reflection on new approaches to research and practice in communication for development and social change.

The Communication and Development Studies is a unique program devoted to multidisciplinary teaching of, and research on, the utilization of information and communication systems and processes to promote community, national and regional development, to support specific development projects, and to facilitate social change. The program is jointly sponsored by the Center for International Studies, and the School of Media Arts and Studies.
