Programme Summary

The African Journalists for Development network (JADE) is a section of JADE Afrique, an association of journalists that specialises in multimedia production, publishing, communication for development and training. JADE Burkina has been in operation since 1994, when it was recognised as an association by the administration of Burkina Faso. It supports rural and community radios in two regions of Burkina Faso and southern Mali. In Mali,the project is experimenting with the use of the Internet to enrich the contents of the Sigida Yeelen magazine on the environment, which is produced with radio Kéné and village-based local communicators.

JADE Burkina Faso activities are:

Media

  • Production of press articles through the agency Système Francophone d'Information Agricole Syfia (which serves about 200 newspapers worldwide, about 3,000 reprints a year, a service providing photographs related to current topics...) and on behalf of other trade publications in the North belonging to international organizations or NGOs in Africa (Groupe Sud Communication in Senegal, Echos du Sahel in Niger) or in Europe (Le Courrier de l'Unesco, Défis Sud, Grain de sel, Demain le Monde)
  • Radio production of Fréquence Verte, a monthly rural world magazine addressed to about one hundred radio broadcasters in Africa
  • CTA radio programme for the production of tapes for rural radios
  • Television production: fiction and news reports (Taxi Brousse series on Canal France International TV); institutional video films (Les sentinelles de la terre, Programme Sahel Burkina Faso GTZ German Cooperation for the Hannover 2000 Expo), etc.

Communication For Development

JADE is responsible for implementing a rural communication and sustainable development project financed by the Centre Canadien de Recherche pour le Développement International, CRDI (Canadian International Development Research Center).

Key Points

JADE's objective is to develop a communication strategy to foster the exchange of information and knowledge between rural communities, farmers' organisations, development agencies and local media, and to develop a synergy among such bodies. The purpose is to support local participation in development initiatives for a better management of natural resources.JADE's objectives are:

  • To strengthen the skills of development agencies, farmers' organizations and media in the field of rural communication for natural resources management.
  • To develop contents based on local knowledge and locally adapted supports according to partners' concerns.
  • To develop a continuous and appropriate mode of evaluation of the role of local communicators, media animators and audiovisual unit managers in development agencies.
  • To document and disseminate data issuing from the experiment to the NGO community, farmers' associations, the media, the research world and the general public.
