Programme Summary

Teachers Net is a portal for teacher's colleges in Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda initiated by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) and developed by the Learning Resource Centre (LRC) in Nairobi, Kenya.

Communication Strategies

The aim of the project is to integrate ICT in educational programmes through the provision of internet access as part of a comprehensive capacity building programme and the establishment of a 'learning community'.

"The intention is to create a virtual platform for exposure and exchange of information. The portal should-- through links -- provide information about the institutions, the programmes on offer, new projects and any other information that is of concern to the targeted educational institutions and their target groups."

The objectives of the web portal are:

  1. to create a virtual network for all teachers' colleges in Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda;
  2. to promote the use of internet in teachers' colleges in the described sub-region;
  3. to share information on ICT projects and resulting active learning strategies in the institutions;
  4. to serve as a "meeting place" for discussions among the members;
  5. to serve as a platform for the offering of on-line and /or distant learning courses; and,
  6. to create a convenient space where educational institutions can market their programmes.

The LRC team is responsible for the coordination of the creation of the portal. A team of 7 lecturers was trained in web design and volunteers a number of hours per week to develop the websites for the teachers colleges and other links.
