STAR Radio - Liberia
STAR Radio is an independent radio station which began broadcasting in July 1997.
40 Liberian journalists produce up to 8 hours of news and information material a day. Additional broadcast material is provided by Search for Common Ground, PANOS and Radio Netherlands.
Peace, political development
There is a general recognition that STAR Radio has set new standards for impartial reporting in the local Liberian context and has led the Liberian Diaspora to hold the Monrovia government to greater accountability because of their access to local news through the Internet. News and programmes are broadcast in Bassa, Dan, English, French, Gbande, Gola, Grebo, Liberian English, Loma, Kissi, Kpelle, Krahn, Kru, Mandingo, Mano, Mende and Vai. STAR Radio's ten-minute morning news bulletins are posted on the Internet and sent free-of-charge to individual subscribers.
Managed by the Swiss NGO Hirondelle Foundation. Funded by USAID through IFES (the International Foundation for Election Systems) as part of their "good governance" support for Liberia. Additional funding from the Dutch government.
Document provided by the ICHR/RP to The Communication Initiative.
